We all know that Harry Potter created an academy fandom that will not die. But you might not know that academy books are the new hot trend. If you love reading about magic or fantasy in a school or college setting you are going to go crazy for this fun genre.
Are you new to the ‘Academy Book‘ craze? I personally love them, so much so that I have my own series coming out soon! (With a talking cat!!!)
There are so many different variations on this sub-genre that I decided to take a further look into some of my favorites, and some of the best sellers on Amazon.
Spellcaster Academy: Magical Realism, Episode 1
Magic exists, Josy sucks at it, and now her cat won’t stop talking.
Seventeen-year-old Josy Barrows thinks she’s an orphan.
So, when opportunity knocks in the form of an address and a plane ticket from a mystery aunt, Josy jumps at the chance to start a new life with her black cat, Nine.
Fast forward.
There’s no aunt, no house… just a weird junk shop in a dark alley.
And a strange owner with a cryptic message who hurries Josy to the back of the shop—
Into a world she never knew existed.
Josy finds herself enrolled at the hidden Spellcaster Academy…with a now talking cat.
With no friends and no magical abilities, Josy can’t stay at the academy if her hot, Enchantment 101 student-tutor, Aspen Rivers keeps refusing to help her pass.
Just when things couldn’t get worse, she may have discovered dark secrets about the academy…
Secrets which could lead to a worse fate than expulsion… one that threatens both The Side of Magic and the regular world she grew up in.
Immortal Academy: Year One
Who wouldn’t want to attend this prestigious supernatural college?
Wolf shifter Jenna Silvers has never known who her parents are, but now that Immortal Academy has selected her, she knows she comes from an immortal shifter bloodline.
When Jenna arrives at Immortal Academy, the enchantment of the school is nothing short of majestic, but as she tries to navigate her way around the place, it becomes evident that something isn’t quite right.
Her first instinct is to tell her friends what she’s experiencing, but it quickly becomes obvious their personalities have changed since arriving at the academy, leaving her all alone on her mission to find out what’s going on.
It’s not until Jenna encounters the impossible—an immortal who has been murdered—that she is desperate for answers, and the only person who seems to have an idea about what is lurking around this school is the impossibly handsome Master shifter, Dominic Rossi. She must now put aside her differences with the alpha wolf, and convince him to help her save the students.
Will she be able to persuade the strongest shifter at the school to join her in exposing this evil school for what it is?
Or will Jenna become the Immortal Academy’s next victim?
Slayer Academy: Secret Shifter
What will happen if the slayers find out that Kate is really a dog shifter?
Kate Canus wants two things, to find a home and to slay vampires. She’s been fending for herself ever since a vampire murdered her mother five years ago. Now, Kate does whatever it takes to enroll in Slayer Academy, and is thrilled when she is selected. The only problem is, Kate’s a shifter, and Slayer Academy trains students to hunt down paranormal creatures like her.
Life as a first-year slayer student means intense physical conditioning, weapons training, and more. When a serial-killing vampire terrorizes town, Kate knows she’s the only one who can stop it. Her shifter senses give her special abilities that the other slayers lack. But is it worth the risk of revealing her secret identity?
Study. Slay. Save the day. Welcome to Slayer Academy.
Academy of Shifters: Werewolves 101
Your Life Begins or Ends at the Academy
For Remi St. James, It started with the blackouts. Then the vivid nightmares. That’s nothing compared to waking up naked, alone in a forest with no recollection of how she got there.
Scary as hell, but what she discovers is far worse.
Remi was changing into something more–something supernatural.
After coming to terms with what she is, Remi starts school at the Gladwell Academy of Shifters, an exclusive and secretive college designed to awaken those with extraordinary abilities.
Remi meets Laith Brighton, an impossibly hot, mountain lion shifter who’s also an irresistible jerk. Then there’s the cliques of werewolves and bears. Plenty of mean girls with mind powers. Everything a regular college has–just a bit weirder. But what she discovers is far darker than anyone could imagine.
Can she maintain her sanity in a place that is incredibly insane?
Supernatural Academy: Freshman Witch
Of course, magic is real. Everybody knows that.
Since it came out on the news that Supernaturals exist, I’ve heard they can do spells, shapeshift, live forever, you name it. Wonderful, right?
Whatever.
In my world—where I’m homeless and spend my time avoiding rats and meth heads—magic sounds like major BS.
But, when I’m accused of stealing and they’re about to arrest me, the item I took disappears from my hand as if by magic. WTF?
Just like that, the Supernatural Academy swoops in and recruits me. But I don’t belong there, and everyone else agrees, including, Rowan Underwood, this rich and annoyingly handsome warlock who has it in for me. He’s investigating the theft of magical artifacts, and he thinks I’m involved.
Seriously? I just got here.
But I can’t worry about that, not while dead kings try to drain my essence or a spell from these angry pixie minotaurs sends my hair follicles into overdrive until I look like Cousin It.
Yet, I can’t avoid Rowan, and while I learn enough magic to stay alive, I also need to keep myself from falling for a guy who’s clearly my worst decision ever.
Oberon Academy Book One: The Orphan
Sometimes the ones who save us are the ones we need to fear the most.
In a world where dark faeries have stepped in to save the planet from humanity’s mistakes, seventeen-year-old December Thorne is nothing but a shadow. Shunned by her peers, bullied at school, and paid a little too much attention by her sleazy foster father, she lives in constant fear and perpetual solitude.
Until the day everything changes.
Offered a scholarship to the prestigious Oberon Academy, December finds herself living in a whole new world. Boundless food, clean clothes, a safe place to sleep, and the potential for true friendship make her new life seem almost too good to be true—but the school has a secret.
The truth is, Oberon Academy isn’t just a prep school for society’s elite. It’s a training ground for a secret race of magical beings no one knows exists. And they’re preparing for war.
Filled with fear and denial, December has a choice to make. She can either return to her pathetic life with her dangerous foster parents, try to survive on her own, or make Oberon Academy her home and discover the truth about who, and what she really is.
And that truth could save the world.
Cursed Academy (Year One)
Giselle Bowman never thought she’d be descended from a Greek god…or a monster.
Klutzes and small-town girls don’t find out they’re descended from the Greek gods. They don’t get taken to Olympian Academy to learn to hone their godlike powers. But when Giselle accidentally summons a void that almost eats her friend, it’s done. Except she doesn’t get sorted into Olympian, but to Cursed Academy, where the descendants of dark gods and the monsters from Greek mythology learn to serve their betters.
And that’s just the start. Giselle 1.) has a new type of magic never seen before and 2.) gets to deal with an epic jerk, Ronin, from Olympian Academy next door. He’s a descendant of Zeus, totally hot, and very out of her league.
Giselle quickly learns her void-summoning powers aren’t normal and that an unknown enemy–perhaps someone in Cursed Academy already–seeks to use her for a plan so vile, it threatens the gods and the modern world. With nowhere else to turn, Giselle must seek help from Ronin, who might have a clue on what she is. If only he’d stop making fun of her every time she trips over her shoelaces.
Is Giselle ready to learn the terrifying truth about herself and her powers?
Darkblood Academy: Book One: Half-Blood
Welcome to Darkblood—oops, I mean Darkhen Academy.
There are three rules to survive the elite supernatural school:
1. Do not talk or even look at The Seven, the uber-powerful supes that rule the academy.
2. Never go into the Fae forest on a full moon… or else.
3. And most definitely do not fall for one of the extremely hot and unattainable instructors.
Too bad I’ve never really been a rule follower…
A year ago the supernaturals came out of the closet on primetime TV, and about a minute ago I, Luna Hallows, found out I was one of them—well, a half-blood anyway.
So here I am at Darkhen Academy, the only human and no magical abilities to speak of. The only reason I’m here is because of my father—a man I didn’t even know existed until now. He’s crazy powerful, and they think I could be too. But what could I possibly contribute to an exclusive squad of dragon shifters, fae, witches, and vampires?
I guess we’re about to find out because the merging of the supernatural and human realms isn’t going as smoothly as planned. If word gets out that humans are no longer safe from the supes, our worlds will once again be closed off.
It’s up to us to stop that from happening.
Fallen Academy: Year One
Brielle Atwater isn’t sure of much, but she knows a few things:
1. Having black wings is not normal.
2. Selling her soul to the demons was a mistake.
3. Lincoln Grey is the biggest jerk she’s ever met … but not falling in love with him might prove impossible.
When angels fell from the sky to war with the demons that ravaged Earth, their combined powers infected humanity. Now, the humans are assigned one of two fates, being either demon gifted or angel blessed.
After wings sprout from Brielle’s back at her awakening ceremony, she’s sure she’s an angel blessed celestial. It’s not until she sees black wings that she realizes something is terribly wrong.
Having sold her contract at a young age to save her father’s life means she should be bound for Tainted Academy. That is, until a fallen angel unexpectedly fights for her to be accepted into Fallen Academy, the elite school for those that inhabit Angel City.
She’s immediately matched with her impossibly handsome celestial teacher, Lincoln Grey. Laying eyes on him, her first thought is that her time at the academy might actually be fun, but this theory quickly fades when she and Lincoln clash on day one. To further prove her admission into Fallen Academy is cursed, the entire school is thrown into chaos when an Abrus demon reveals that he knows Brielle’s secret. Now, above all else, Lincoln must fight to protect her.
To his surprise, the only thing more difficult than trying to save her … is trying not to fall for her.
Spellcrest Academy
Keep your enemies close…
Maeve Rhodes is not your typical Good Samaritan. However, when she stumbles upon a fallen, elderly woman, she stops and tries to do the right thing. Little does she know that this chance encounter will forever change the direction of her life.
Marked with a new tattoo emblazoned across her chest and struggling to control a whole host of new powers, Maeve finds her life spiraling out of control. That is, until one more chance encounter offers an explanation… and a privileged opportunity to attend Spellcrest Academy.
Paired with a shy elf and a moody Nephilim, Maeve quickly takes to her new home at the premier magical institution, not to mention the dreamy senior advisor whom, for some idiotic reason, she can’t stop thinking about. Love at first sight is sappy sh—crap for fairy tales, not real life. However, she can’t deny the instant connection.
As the school year progresses, Maeve discovers her invitation to the Academy might not have been so innocent after all. Sinister forces want her unique abilities and are willing to kill for them.
Maeve doesn’t just need to survive her classes, she must survive the plots against her, a decades-old magical war, and following her own capricious heart. She’s never been averse to diving into danger, but this time, she might be in over her head.
